Panniculectomy

Removes the overhanging apron of skin below the navel. Functional rather than cosmetic: it does not tighten muscle, reposition the navel, or contour the waist. The cheapest route to getting the hang out of the way, and the one most likely to be covered by insurance when there is documented rash or infection.

What it removes, and what it leaves

A panniculectomy takes off the overhanging apron of skin and fat below the navel. It does not tighten the abdominal muscles, move the navel, or narrow the waist. An abdominoplasty usually does those things. The two operations answer different problems, and a price for one is not a price for the other.

People look at a panniculectomy when the apron causes rash, odor, or trouble with hygiene and walking. An insurer will sometimes pay when that history is documented. Whether a particular plan will pay is a question for that insurer and that surgeon.

How to read a number

The operating time on this page is why the facility and anesthesia lines exist at all. A figure labelled "surgeon fee only" in the benchmark table is a partial number. Reports on this site are the total someone paid, with those lines broken out when the person itemised them.

This page describes the operation. It is not a recommendation to have surgery.

Common questions

What does a panniculectomy leave behind?

It removes the overhanging apron of skin below the navel. It does not tighten the abdominal muscles, move the navel, or narrow the waist. An abdominoplasty usually does those things, so the two prices are not the same operation.

Does insurance pay for a panniculectomy?

Sometimes, when a documented rash, odor, or trouble with hygiene is on file. Whether a particular plan pays is a question for that insurer and that surgeon. This site cannot promise coverage.

Complication rate

Published rate: 17.4%

Aesthetic Surgery Journal, 894 panniculectomy patients: 17.4% overall (dehiscence 8.4%, infection 5.8%, hematoma 4.6%, seroma 4.1%)

A high number here usually means frequent minorcomplications — wound separation and fluid collections that are managed in the office over weeks — rather than disasters. It is the main reason having this surgery far from home is a bad trade. We are not doctors; discuss these figures with a surgeon.
